Mweb-Multichoice: a secret history

Owned by Naspers, a South African multinational media group with a well documented apartheid history, the MultiChoice African business provides multi-channel pay television and subscriber management services in 48 countries in Sub-Sahara Africa and the adjacent Indian Ocean islands.

This indepth history maps the interaction of culture, politics and shifting economic landscapes in Africa through Multichoice: exposing the reconversion of apartheid capital; exploring South Africa’s spread into the continent via Mbeki’s African renaissance and how specific programming was used to attempt to make South Africa palatable to the rest of Africa; and global capital: the shifting economic relations between countries, issues of race and class, and perceptions of self and other, among others, in an increasingly global world.
